What is a Root Canal or Root Canal Treatment?

A Root Canal Treatment is a procedure that involves a dentist removing harmful decay, bacteria, and nerves from the tooth’s pulp chamber or canals. Special medicine is placed into the tooth’s canals and then sealed up to restore the tooth’s function. Some teeth have more ‘canals’ than others and can even be shaped differently as well, making some Root Canals extremely difficult and others very simple.

You’ll want to make sure to choose a dentist near you that is comfortable with your specific Root Canal case. If the case is too difficult for your dentist, you should be referred to an Endodontist – a dentist that specializes in Root Canals.

What Causes the Need for a Root Canal?

When a tooth is cracked or experiences a deep cavity, the pulp tissue may become exposed to harmful bacteria. These bacteria enter the tooth and eventually cause the tissue to become inflamed, which can cause severe infection. Not only is this painful, but it’s also extremely dangerous as the infection may form an abscess and has the potential to spread.

Once the pulp tissue becomes infected, the tooth’s nerve should be removed along with all decay and bacteria. As the tooth’s nerve is not essential to its function, a Root Canal is a great treatment to avoid extraction and remedy the infection and pain caused by the inflamed tooth nerve.

How are Root Canals Done?

Root Canals have a wide range of complexity due to the variety of tooth canal numbers, sizes, and shapes. However, many dentists are able to complete a Root Canal Treatment in just one or two appointments. Here are the basic steps to a Root Canal Treatment:

Rubber Dam Placement

– This allows for proper isolation of the tooth and ensures that all debris is collected and controlled

Creation of Access Cavity

– Create an opening to the tooth’s pulp chamber so your dentist can see the damage that’s been done and the structure of the tooth’s interior

Identifying Canal Structures

– Your dentist will then identify the number of canals in the specific tooth. The number of canals cannot be identified using just a 2D X-Ray image, so this is the first time the number of canals can be confirmed

Tooth Length Measurements

– Each of your tooth’s canals will need to be measured down to the millimeter. This helps your dentist to make sure they clean the entire canal

Cleaning and Shaping Canals

– All decay, debris, bacteria, and tooth roots will be removed from each canal. Your dentist will then file the canals to create a more conducive environment for the incoming dental materials

Sealing of Tooth

– A dental material called Gutta Percha is now inserted into each cleaned canal to seal it up

Placing of Filling or Crown

– A regular filling or crown is placed and the Root Canal is complete!

Root Canals should be completed within 1.5 to 3 hours of chair time. However, the overall complexity of the case and the specific type of tooth (Example: front tooth vs molar) will have a large impact on the time required for the procedure. Root Canals are a common service our dentists provide, so feel free to give us a call if you’re looking for a Dentist for Root Canals in Collingwood.

What Kind of Discomfort Can be Expected After the Root Canal Appointment?

It is very common to experience some form of discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity after a Root Canal procedure. However, if any of these symptoms last beyond three days, you should make a follow-up Root Canal appointment with our dentists at Collingwood Family Dental.

Are Root Canals Covered by Dental Insurance?

Yes, Root Canals are typically covered by Dental Insurance Plans as ‘Basic’ treatment. However, not all Dental Insurance plans are the same, so you should always do your best to understand your Dental Insurance coverage. As Dental Insurance Plans can be extremely confusing, we’d be more than happy to help explain your coverage at your appointment. We can always provide estimates or submit a pre-determination to see exactly what your Insurance Plan will cover!

At Collingwood Family Dental, we offer Direct Insurance Billing for the convenience of our patients. This means we will submit your Root Canal claim for you and collect all necessary payments on your behalf. This means you are just left to pay any co-payments, deductibles, or other necessary payments at the time of service.
